Mr. Erik Solheim, a Norwegian diplomat and former Minister of Norway, who served as the UN Deputy Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Environmental Programme between 2016 and 2018 as Vice-Chairman of the board. As Vice-Chair of the Europe-Asia Center, Erik Solheim will have key responsibility in promoting the green transition and sustainability, two areas of great importance for the future of Europe-Asian relations. With a wealth of experience in international relations and a deep understanding of the complexities of the global environment, Erik Solheim is well-positioned to help drive forward the Center’s mission of fostering closer ties between Europe and Asia. “We are thrilled to welcome Erik to the Europe-Asia Center,” said Ambassador (ret.)   • Press release: Amb. Piet Steel on a mission trip to Princess Elisabeth Antarctica

    Brussels – January 18th, 2023 Between January 7th and 15th, the Chairman of Europe – Asia Center Amb. (ret.) Piet Steel visited in his capacity as the Vice President of the Belgian Polar Secretariat on Antarctica the Princess Elisabeth base, the scientific base of Belgium in the Antarctic region. He was accompanied by Oliver Périer and Marc Speeckaert, Members of the Board of the International Polar Foundation (PEA), of which the Chairman, Alain Hubert is the Operator of the station. During his visit he held several dialogue meetings in PEA, including with Barbara Creecy, Minister of Environment of South Africa and Olivier Poivre d’Arvor, French Ambassador of the Arctic and Antarctic Region. His visit made significant impression and added to the understanding why PEA is widely seen as a benchmark in terms of renewable energies and CO2 emissions management. He spoke to several Belgian and international scientists using PEA is their base for field experiments and research on matters related to climate change such as meteorology, glaciology and meteorites. The Belgian Princess Elisabeth Station is overall regarded as a role model for which Belgium can be truly proud. Europe – Asia Center is as part of its mission dedicated towards promoting dialogue on global challenges, and we look forward to initiating dialogue on topics of climate change that is most profoundly visible in the North and South Poles.   • Press release: “The Light of Civilization” – A Comprehensive Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings showcased in Brussels

    De Warande, Brussels – December 5, 2022 “The Light of Civilization”, an exhibition on China’s Song Dynasty paintings in Brussels, organized by Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and Zhejiang University, and supported by Europe-Asia Centre, was officially inaugurated on 5th December 2022 in Brussels. In the majestic setting of Brussel’s prime venue De Warande, nearly 60 guests from the European political, business and art communities were taken on a cultural journey of the great Song Dynasties. Inauguration was celebrated in attendance of H.E. Cao Zhongmin (Ambassador of People’s Republic of China to Belgium), H.E. Xiang Xiaowei and H.E. Xiong Wei (Minister Counsellors of the China Mission to the EU), Ambassador (ret.) Piet Steel (Chairman of the Europe -Asia Center), Honourable Dr. Andreas Schwab (Member of the European Parliament, CDU – EPP), Em. Prof. Dr. Luk Taerwe (Director of the East Asian Platform of Ghent University), Frank Schwalba-Hoth (former member of the European Parliament, Green party), Alexander De Beir (Chairman of Belgium HK Society), Guido Gerricauzen (Head of Outreach of the House of European History). Opening ceremony was celebrated with opening notes by Mr Chen Guangsheng (Secretary of the Party Leadership Group, Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism), Ambassador Cao Zhongmin, Ambassador (ret.) More than Song 100 paintings on display, part of the comprehensive collection of the Ancient Chinese Paintings are presented in three sections: “A Glance at the People’s Daily Life in the Song Dynasty”, “Rhythm of Life in the Flowers and Birds”, “An Externalized Spiritual World in the Landscape Paintings”. Paintings over a reflection of the social and economic development of the Song Dynasty, the elevated status of the literati and the common artistic preferences of all social classes. From delicate technique features to demonstration of vivid details, paintings convey the artistic vision and elevated spiritual meaning. Fascinating time-travel to the breathtaking Song Dynasty era almost a millennium in the past was most frequent impression of the exhibition guests. Secretary of the Party Leadership Group from the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism Mr Chen Guangsheng highlighted the significance of Song Dynasty for reaching the heights of elegance and prosperity. The Song paintings have become the common wealth of human civilization and as the tittle of exhibition indicates, “The Light of Civilization” – contributing to revival of history and developing a joint vision of harmonious future between Europe and China. In his opening remark, Ambassador Cao Zhongmin highlighted that this exhibition, with the power of technology, allows the audience to better understand the customs and the superb techniques of the artists of the Song Dynasty. Each of the Song paintings tells a story and reflects a greater philosophical vision of society. The inspiration the Renaissance art in Europe or great heritage of Song Dynasty has given to humanity is eternal and beyond context of culture. And it is cultural legacy that should be the source of continued strengthening of dialogue between civilizations of the West and East. The inauguration was furthermore celebrated with a cultural salon, where the famous European pianist Jean-Francois Maljean, a regular visitor to Zhejiang Province, inspired audience with his piano piece “The Inspiration of Zhejiang”. Prof. Dr. Christoph Anderl from Ghent University shared his expert insights on the culture and artistic achievements of the Song Dynasty. The period of the Song Dynasty was “a period of economic and cultural prosperity, which has been, through the invention of printing technology, expanding by its philosophical and religious thinking across the Central Asia and beyond.” Taking Ma Yuan’s painting ‘Walking on a Mountain Path in Spring’ and Fan Kuan’s ‘Travelers among Mountains and Streams’ as an example, he highlighted to the audience the great variation of perspectives each of the paintings presents. Em. Prof. Dr. Luk Taerwe reflected on his encounters with rich history of Zhejiang’s history, from the Paleolithic Age and the primitive ‘Jiande people’, to the Wuyue culture and Jiangnan culture. Heritage that is a real testimony of Zhejiang being the birthplace of ancient Chinese civilization. Not to forget the numerous inventions, including the movable type printing and gunpowder, inventions that have been brought along the Silk Road thanks to the Song Dynasty. The Song paintings present Zhejiang’s rich cultural diversity and the ultimate aesthetics of Chinese art. The complete collection is compiled and published by Zhejiang University and the Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Heritage Bureau. Collection presents a significant national cultural project, result of joint effort of 263 cultural institutions and museums in China and abroad. Partners succeed in collecting 12,405 pieces (sets) of Chinese paintings, covering most of the well-known masterpieces.   • Press release: “A Moment in the Song” – A Comprehensive Collection of Ancient Chinese Paintings showcased in London, UK

    Asia House, London – November 23, 2022 “A Moment in the Song”, an exhibition of China’s Song Dynasty paintings in the UK, organized by Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and Zhejiang University, and supported by Europe-Asia Centre, was launched at London’s Asia House. Highlight event was presented as part of the celebration of 50th Anniversary of the diplomatic relations between People’s Republic of China and United Kingdom. Opening speech was presented by Mr Chu Ziyu, Director General of Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, followed by Ambassador (ret.) Piet Steel (Chairman of Europe-Asia Center), MP Mark Logan (Member of the British Parliament and Parliamentary Private Secretary), H.E. Yang Xiaoguang (Minister of the Chinese Embassy in the UK), Mr Mick Davies PRBA (Chairman of the Royal Society of British Artists) and Ms Ping Huang FRSA (Secretary General of the Zhejiang UK Association), invited to inaugurate the exhibition.     De Warande, Brussels – November 15, 2022 The event “Beauty of Harmony – Picturesque Zhejiang 2022” was presented as part of inauguration of the European office of Zhejiang Culture and Tourism department. Opening seminar featured keynote address by H.E. Erik Solheim, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), H.E. Mr. Cao Zhongming, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Belgium, Ambassador (ret.) Piet Steel, Chairman of the Europe-Asia Center, Mr. Chu Ziyu, Director of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, and prof. Greg Richards, a leading expert in the field of cultural and creative tourism. Guests were welcomed by Matic Gajšek, Deputy Director of the Europe – Asia Center, who announced the official opening of Zhejiang Culture and Tourism European office. He emphasized the opportunities Zhejiang’s cultural and tourism offer poses for strengthening economic and cultural exchange between China and Europe in the post-epidemic era. In the opening address, Ambassador (ret.) Piet Steel delivered a keynote speech in which he emphasized the important impact of tourism on revitalizing the economy, especially in the light of the global epidemic of the Covid-19. Moreover, the Zhejiang cultural tourism event means that China’s cultural industries, institutions, new platforms and organizational networks can build friendly bridges between China and Europe. As a first guest keynote, H.E. Ambassador Cao Zhongming spoke about the significant impact of Zhejiang’s cultural tourism on China-Europe relations and welcomed the audience to experience Zhejiang. He emphasized the contribution Culture and Tourism Promotion Center in Europe will make for cultural and tourism collaboration, and most importantly promote mutual understanding between Zhejiang and Europe. His excellency Erik Solheim introduced his rich personal experiences with Zhejiang and numerous visits to Hangzhou, which has been profoundly shaped with heritage of Song Yun culture. He shared several examples of environmental leadership, including the highest UN Environmental Award that has been awarded to the province for their significant work in protecting the natural ecosystems. He emphasized the need for stronger exchange and international collaboration in culture and tourism, in light of the post-pandemic recovery and sustainable growth. As the expert contributor to this high-level event, prof. Greg Richards, who is the leading international authority in Cultural and Creative Tourism research, highlighted the progress and increasing significance of cultural tourism throughout the past decade. The new paradigm of cultural tourism, characterized by a shift from passive sightseeing to active living tourism, is offering both new opportunities and re-defining cultural consumption patterns. Hangzhou’s experience illustrates how cities are building cultural and creative centers based on their cultural heritage and broadening the prospects for tourism.   • High-level luncheon exploring the prospects of the Sino – European relations

    Brussels May 24th, 2023 A high-level luncheon chaired by H.E. Erik Solheim, vice-chair of the Europe-Asia Center on the occasion of the visit to Brussels by the Executive Committee of the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) explored the leaders insight on EU – China dialogue and prospects of Sino –European relations. Among the participating guests the center was delighted to host H.E. Secretary of State Baron Frans van Daele, Dr. Henry Huiyao Wang, Founder and President of the Center for China and Globalization (CCG), Dr. Mabel Lu MIAO, Co-founder and Secretary-General of CCG, Mr. Dominic Porter, Head of Division China, EEAS, Mr. WANG Yiwei, Jean Monnet Chair Professor. Key topics on the EU-China dialogue were comprehensively addressed during the luncheon, encompassing discussions on the EU-China Investment and Trade Agreement, EU’s Strategic autonomy, cooperation in the quest of addressing the global climate challenges and engagement of the global South. An instrumental outcome of the luncheon was the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Europe-Asia Center and the Center for China and Globalization (CCG).   • Press release: “Tea For Harmony – Yaji Cultural Salon” Unveils the Splendor of Chinese Tea Culture in Copenhagen

    Copenhagen – June 14th, 2023 On June 14th 2023, the “Tea for Harmony: Yaji Cultural Salon” was inaugurated at the China Cultural Center in Copenhagen, Denmark. The exhibition was organized in collaboration between the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, the Chinese Embassy in Denmark, the China Cultural Center in Copenhagen and the Europe-Asia Center. Presented under the special theme of “Tea for Hygge,” the event captivated the audience by a showcase of delightful flavors of Chinese tea heritage and a tranquil atmosphere creating a true comfort of Hygge. In his opening address, Mr. RUI Hong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Group and Deputy Director-General (Director-General level) of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism extended a warm welcome to all the distinguished guests present at the event. He highlighted the long standing history of tea and tea craftmanship to the province of Zhejiang, one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization. Zhejiang prides itself on the “traditional tea processing techniques and associated social practices in China”, which have been included as one of the first on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. He explained that the term “Yaji” refers to the ancient gatherings where literati and scholars enjoyed tea, appreciated the moon, recited poetry, and engaged in intellectual discussions. Mr. Zheng extended a warm invitation to friends from all spheres of life in Denmark, inviting them to embark on a spontaneous journey to visit Zhejiang. Rounding the event, the audience was able to enjoy a promotional video showcasing the unique cultural and tourism features of Zhejiang as well as the highlight performance of the evening, with a performance of the Zhejiang folk song “Tea Picking Dance” (in arrangement for traditional instruments of zhongruan, flute, erhu, and guitar). Magnificent artistry of Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe performing the “Water-sleeve” dance About the exhibition The exhibition, themed “Tea for Hygge” was comprised of five major sections: “Hygge of Color”, “Hygge of Fragrance”, “Hygge of Melody,” “Hygge of Scrolls” and “Hygge of Creation.” These sections artfully embodied the unique tea experience cherished by the Chinese people. “Hygge of Colors” presented the ever-changing hues of tea, complemented by exquisite tea utensils. “Hygge of Fragrance” focused on showcasing diverse tea aromas. “Hygge of Melody” used digital devices to showcase classical tea poetry and music. “Hygge of Scrolls” displayed ancient and contemporary tea books from China and around the world, while “Hygge of Creation” exhibited creatively designed tea derivatives, including innovative tea wares, tea snacks, tea beverages, and various other categories.     Brussels – September 26th, 2023 The Brussels based Europe-Asia Center is delighted to announce the appointment of Belgian diplomat Ambassador Jean De Ruyt – former Permanent Representative of Belgium to the European Union and currently a Senior Advisor for the law firm Covington in Brussels, a member of the Belgian Royal Academy and a Senior Associate Fellow of the Egmont Institute. “ I am honoured to be joining the board of the Europe-Asia Center to contribute to the Europe-Asia dialogue that is so important in today’s world.   • Press release: High-level dialogue on the state and prospects of EU – China Relations with the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC)

    Brussels – 19th October 2023 On Thursday, 19th October 2023, on the occasion of the visit to Brussels by the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the Europe – Asia Center hosted a high-level dialogue titled “EU – China dialogue: Insights on prospects of Sino-European relations”. During the high-level exchange, executive representatives of both Europe – Asia Center and CPPCC engaged in a comprehensive discussions regarding the current state as well as the future prospects of the Sino-European relations. During the dialogue, participants delved into a wide array of topics, ranging from global climate emergency, education, culture, and sports, among others. Representatives, including Ambassador (ret.) Piet Steel, Chairman of the Europe-Asia Center, Ambassador Mr. Jean De Ruyt and Madame Sheila Arora, both Vice-chairman of the Europe-Asia Center, Madame Lisa Lang, Director of Policy & EU Affairs Orchestrator at Climate KIC, Mr. WANG Guangqing, Vice-chairman of the Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and Ambassador Mr. FU Cong, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Head of Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the European Union, concluded the dialogue by emphasising the need for fostering a constructive exchanges of ideas and perspectives.
